What is ping? A good ping in ms, and why it rises

Last updated: 6 min read

Ping is the time a small signal takes to travel from your device to a server and back, measured in milliseconds (1000 ms = 1 second). Low ping means instant response in games and video calls. On HIZTESTI, typical ping in Turkey is 21 ms on fixed lines and 44 ms on mobile networks. Distance to the server and how busy your line is decide it more than anything.

What decides ping the most?

Distance. The signal travels through fibre at about two thirds of the speed of light, and the route is never straight: data takes winding paths and passes many devices between cities. The further away the server, the longer the route and the higher the ping.

That's why speed tests pick a server near you and games let you choose a region. If your ping is high, check which server you measured against first.

What's a good ping?

PingHow it feels
30 ms or lessInstant. Comfortable for fast games and video calls.
30–60 msUnnoticeable day to day; slight lag in competitive games.
Over 60 msLag becomes obvious in games and puts you at a disadvantage in fast ones.

These are practical thresholds we use, not an official standard. On HIZTESTI 73.4% of fixed-line measurements are 30 ms or less and 91.9% are 60 ms or less. On mobile networks only 10.7% stay 30 ms or less.

Why does ping suddenly spike?

  • The line is full: while someone at home downloads or uploads something big, packets queue in the router. This is called bufferbloat.
  • Wi-Fi: weak signal and neighbouring networks cause packets to be resent, so ping both rises and wobbles. More in the Wi-Fi guide.
  • Mobile network: distance to the cell tower and crowding make ping swing; see the mobile signal guide.
  • Evening hours: typical ping stays almost flat all day, but it wobbles more as the line gets busy; we show the data in why the internet slows in the evening.

How much ping moves during a test is called jitter, and in games it matters as much as average ping; we cover it in what is jitter.

Lowering your ping

  1. Connect the device to the router with a cable; the wobble Wi-Fi adds disappears.
  2. Pick the server region closest to you in games and apps.
  3. Pause big downloads and backups at home while you're doing something important.
  4. Turn on QoS or SQM on your router if it has it, so ping stays low even when the line is busy.

Typical ping is 15 ms when the server is under 50 km away and 56 ms beyond 1000 km. Measuring against a distant server shows noticeably higher ping even on a good line.

Frequently asked questions

What should my ping be?
60 ms or less is enough for everyday use; 30 ms or less is comfortable for fast games. Typical fixed-line ping on HIZTESTI is 21 ms.
Are ping and latency the same?
In everyday use, yes. Technically, ping is the round-trip time of a signal sent to measure latency.
Will a faster plan lower my ping?
Usually not. Distance and how busy your line is decide ping. If your line is constantly full, a bigger plan can help indirectly.
Why is ping higher on mobile data?
Data goes to the cell tower first and then through the operator's network; those extra steps and signal conditions add to ping. Typical mobile ping on HIZTESTI is 44 ms.
