No internet or slow internet
When a result is lower than you expected, it isn't always your internet; your PC and your home network affect the result too.
If there's no internet
A measurement works by connecting to test servers over the internet, so without a connection it can't run. First check whether a page opens in your browser; if it doesn't, check your modem and cables.
Warnings before a measurement
The app tells you before measuring about anything that could lower the result. Warnings never block the measurement; you can still measure if you want.
- Energy saver is on — Windows is running the PC more slowly to save energy; turning it off while measuring gives a more accurate result.
- Memory is running low — when memory runs low your PC slows down and measurement data is processed late, so your internet speed may read lower than it is. Close apps you aren't using.
- Your processor is busy — other apps are keeping the processor busy, so measurement data is processed late and your internet speed may read low. Close heavy apps and measure again.
- Data is transferring in the background — a download or upload is running in the background, which can make your internet speed read lower than it is. Let it finish or pause it.
- A VPN seems to be on — the result measures the VPN server's speed, not your own internet. Turn the VPN off temporarily for the most accurate measurement.
If the speed is lower than expected
- To see your internet connection's true speed, connect your PC to the modem with an Ethernet cable. A wireless connection can limit the measured speed.
- If you're testing over Wi-Fi, pick the 5 GHz network and stay close to the modem. 2.4 GHz reaches farther but is slower.
- Pause videos and downloads on other devices on the same network (TV, phone, tablet) until the test is done.
- A single measurement only shows that moment. Run several tests at different times and look at the overall trend.
